Fortunately, the rain in Yunnan usually doesn’t last long, and your traveling experience may get impacted somehow, but it won’t be significant.

Temperature:

When other areas in the same latitude are hot, most places in Yunnan are mild and favorable because of its high altitude. In places like Kunming, Lijiang, and Dali, the average high temperature is around 25°C (77°F) and the average low is around 15°C (59°F), meaning that you can experience warm but not hot daytime and cool but not cold night. In some even higher altitude places like Shangri-La, the temperature is relatively low, but you will not feel cold with the average low of about 10°C (50°F). In southern areas such as Xishuangbanna and Honghe, the temperature is higher. But thanks to the high rainfall, it is not so hot, and the average maximum temperature is stable at around 30°C (86°F).

Sunshine & Daylight:

In July, the daytime duration is above 13 hours on average, with the sunrise at around 06:30 and the sunset at around 20:00. However, the high precipitation leads to the average sunshine hours of only about 5 hours/day. Besides, the UV index is high at about 11 this month, and you are advised to try to avoid going out at the noon hours on sunny days.

Packing Advice for Yunnan Trip in July

Yunnan July Packing List

Clothes: Yunnan weather in July is mild overall, and thin summer clothes are essential. For example, males can pack light pants, T-shirts, and short shirts, and in addition to these, females can pack several dresses. Considering the high UV rays, you just need to add a thin jacket like a sun protection jacket. If Shangri-La or other high-altitude places are also in your travel list, you should carry one or two thicker pants and thicker jackets like baseball jackets. Actually, a venture jacket is quite recommended because it can protect you from getting wet and catching a cold in Shangri-La with changeable climate.

Shoes: In rainy July, waterproof shoes like walking shoes and hiking shoes are perfect for a trip to Yunnan. Besides, you can also prepare water shoes and sandals for places with higher temperature like Xishuangbanna.

Other items: The climate of Yunnan in July is quite unpredictable, so be sure to always bring an umbrella with you. Sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 can help you prevent from getting sunburn on sunny days. Moreover, during your trip to Xishuangbanna in July, remember to bring mosquito repellent all the time.

Though the specific activities vary, they usually all include torch lighting and bonfire parties with unique ethnic dances, which welcome visitors to participate.
