Yunnan Weather in June

Season: Summer

In short: relatively high rainfall with many showers, favorable temperature in most places

Central and Eastern Yunnan including Kunming, Lijiang, and Dali:

Even stepping into summer, this region has favorable and not very high temperature: averagely, the minimum is around 15°C (59°F) and the maximum is around 25°C (77°F); and the temperature difference between daytime and nighttime is gradually becoming smaller. However, it is advisable to wear an extra jacket in the morning and evening. In terms of rainfall, these places are in the rainy season now, with an average monthly rainfall of above 150 mm and more than 15 rainy days. But actually, you don’t need to cancel your related travel plan even though the weather forecast shows that there may be many rainy days, because the rain usually stops quickly and you can see even more beautiful scenery after a shower.

High-altitude Northwestern Yunnan including Shangri-La:

Compared with other places of Yunnan, these places have relatively lower rainfall. However, the average rainfall is also above 100 mm and you may encounter some showers. The temperature this month rises to a cool but not cold level, with the average high temperature of around 20°C (68°F).

Southern Yunnan including Xishuangbanna and Honghe:

These places are also in the rainy season. But the rainfall are mostly short showers that won’t influence your travel a lot. The average high temperature of around 30°C (86°F) and high rainfall may make the weather stuffy sometimes.

What to Pack to Visit Yunnan in June

Clothes: When traveling to places like Xishuangbanna, you are advised to pack dresses, T-shirts, short shirts, and light pants. On this basis, when going north to Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang, thin jackets like sun protection jackets or shirts are recommended, which can protect you from the UV rays when the sun is shining and keep you warm when the sun is absent. Besides, shorts and skirts are not recommended, which may cause sunburn on your legs. To keep warm in Shangri-La, you also need to bring thick pants and relatively thick jackets like baseball jackets or thin windbreaker.

Shoes: With the relatively changeable weather of Yunnan, you’d better carry waterproof sneakers or casual shoes for most cities. For the trip to Xishuangbanna, sandals are needed.

Accessories: This month, protection from the rain is just as important as protection from the sun rays, so you are advised to bring rain gear as well as sunscreen, sunglasses, and sunhats. If you plan to go to Xishuangbanna, mosquito repellent is also important.

1. The climate of Yunnan in June is relatively good: places like Kunming, Lijiang, and Dali are warm but not hot, and Shangri-La is cool. Though there is high rainfall, your trip will not be disturbed because the rain usually stops quickly. It is a good destination to escape from the summer heat of the Northern Hemisphere.

2. June belongs to the shoulder season, so you can enjoy a quiet trip with less spending.

3. Going to Yunnan in June 2025, you can eat fresh mushrooms, because June is the start of wild mushroom season.

1. Shangri-La

June is a quite good time to travel to Shangri-La. At this time, you can go to Potatso National Park to see the serene lakes, the vast alpine meadows that have turned completely green, and the herds of cows and goats grazing leisurely on the green; go to the Baima Snow Mountain to see the purple sea of azaleas in full bloom with the snow-capped mountains as the background; and go to Tiger Leaping Gorge for a hike to see the Jinsha River at its rough time.

2. Lijiang

In June, while many other areas of the same latitude start to get hot, Lijiang still enjoys a warm and comfortable temperature, perfect for escaping the heat. This month, a must-see attraction is Lugu Lake, where in addition to the blue lake, you’ll also see the white Ottelia acuminata floating on the water. Besides, this month, Spruce Plateau is also in its most beautiful state, and you will see the majestic Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and lush grass and spruce forest. If time permits, be sure to visit Baisha Village at the foot of the Snow Mountain to experience the quaint and tranquil life of the Naxi people.

3. Puzhehei

Puzhehei is famous for its typical karst landscape with lakes, peaks, forests, caves, and wetlands. June, especially late June, is the best time to go to Puzhehei to enjoy the lotus blooming. You can take a boat to travel among the lotus flowers. When you come across other boats passing by, you may be invited to have a water fight. You are also recommended to visit Qinglong Mountain, where you can overlook the whole view of Puzhehei and see beautiful sunrise and sunset.
