Yunnan Weather in February

In short: mild central and eastern part like Kunming; cold northwestern area like Shangri-la; warm southern region like Xishuangbanna; a few rainy days
 In these places of Yunnan, the weather is cold in the morning and at night, and cool in other times, which can be judged by the large gap between the average high temperature of 20°C (68°F) and the average low temperature of 5°C (41°F). As for the precipitation, these places are in the dry season and do not have much rain, so you don’t need to worry that your trip will be disturbed by rain. The air may be a little dry and you are advised to take some moisturizing measures.

 With a higher altitude, these places have much lower temperature than other places in Yunan. On most days, you may experience the low temperature of below 0°C (32°F). The precipitation and humidity are both low, and you may even encounter a few snowy days.
 The climate of these places is quite favorable in February: their average high temperature can be above 20°C (68°F), and even the low temperature can reach 10°C (50°F). Therefore, you may feel warm most of the time. The cozy temperature together with only a few rainy days makes February a good time to travel to these places.

 February is one of the best months to go to Kunming to see seagulls. At this time, all the wetland parks along Dianchi Lake such as Haigeng Park and Green Lake Park will have a large number of seagulls gathering. If you are interested, it is recommended that you go in the morning, when the seagulls are more active. In addition, this month, you can see large scales of blooming tulips in Green Lake Park. The famous Stone Forest, where to enjoy the karst landforms and see various shapes of rocks, is also a must-see spot in Kunming.

 February is also one of the best months to see the stunning views of the Meili Snow Mountain in Shangri-la: the sun gradually rises from the top of the mountain, coloring the white snowy peaks golden. On top of that, the rolling snow-capped mountains themselves are worth visiting. It is also recommended to go to Potatso National Park to enjoy the silence of winter, when the yellow grass and the deep blue lake form a free and expansive scene. On snowy days, you will see a magnificent white frozen world that seems to stretch forever.

 In February, the weather is still a bit cool, making it a good time to enjoy a comfortable hot spring bath. Tengchong, which is one of China’s three major geothermal areas and rich in hot springs, is a perfect destination for you. Except for the hot spring, on a clear day, you can go around Heshun Ancient Town, which has a history of more than 600 years, to savor the local cuisine and feel local people’s slow lifestyle. In addition, February is the season of camellias, and the Laifeng Mountain National Forest Park, less than 6 kilometers away from Heshun Ancient Town, is a good place to admire camellias.
