Nara Weather in August

Season: Late summer

August is the hottest time of the year in Nara and the weather there is really torrid. The average temperature comes up to 31℃ (87.8℉), with the average low temperature of 27℃ (80.6℉) and the average high temperature of 33℃ (91.4℉). The intolerable heat and the high humidity always make Nara weather in August sweltering. As the rainy season comes to an end, there are only some short afternoon showers in this month, bringing down the temperature to some extent thereafter. Of course, airy short clothes are the optimal.

Recommendation Rate:

In August, Mount Kasuga Primeval Forest behind Kasuga Taisha Shrine is a great summer resort as well as a superb place to get close to nature. Nara Park is often full of people for deer feeding, and where over 20,000 large candles laid out beforehand will be lit at August night for best wishes. Nara National Museum is also interesting to see the precious historical pieces and escape from the heat. Chugen Mantoro Lantern Festival during Obon Festival is a must if you are Buddhists. In particular, the lantern wishing gathering in Todai-ji Temple is the grandest on August 15th.

Tips

1. Although it’s very hot in August, Nara is not crowded with fewer visitors. Thus, you may enjoy a trip there at a leisurely pace.

2. Mount Kasuga Primeval Forest, or called Kasugayama Genshirin, with fresh air and deer, is good for a stroll. It’s home to many trees dating to early Heian Age. However, don’t go to the places without a road or don’t stay inside after night falls.
