By Air:

In Mongolia, currently, the only international airport is the Chinggis Khaan International Airport. It is at the distance of 18 km (11.1 miles) to the southwest of downtown Ulaanbaatar. After the reconstruction in 1986, the facilities like immigration, luggage delivery, and customs formalities are relatively efficient. Mongolian Airlines is offering direct international flights to cities like Frankfurt, Seoul, Beijing, Berlin, Moscow, Hong Kong, Singapore, Osaka (only in summer), and Tokyo. Another airline called Hunnu Airlines, is offering flights to and from the cities of China like Manzhouli, Erlian, and Hailar. This airline also offers flights to domestic cities like Uliastai, Hovd or Khovd, and Ulaangom.

By Train:

The train is another convenient choice of Ulaanbaatar transportation (See also Ulaanbaatar Train Station). The train journey to Ulaanbaatar is possible from Russia, Moscow, and Beijing on the Trans-Mongolian line of the Trans-Siberian Railway, which is a direct but long journey. From Ulan Ude in Russia, the Trans-Mongolian Railway connects to Trans-Siberian Railway to reach Erenhot and Beijing through Ulaanbaatar. In this travel, the Mongolian section is about 1,110 km (689.7 miles). The lines connect Darkhan to the copper mines of Erdenet and Ulaanbaatar to the coal mines of Baganuur. Ulaanbaatar station is the main station and other important stations are Darkhan, Choir, Sükhbaatar, and Zamyn-Üüd or Erenhot. Domestic trains run between Ulaanbaatar and Darkhan, Erdenet, Sainshand, and Zamyn-Üüd. Here are the details of trains.

Get around Ulaanbaatar

By Taxi:

In Ulaanbaatar transportation, there are two types of taxi services. One is the cab with designated taxi symbols, and the other is a non-marked private car. Taxis are cheap, which are charging around MNT800 (USD0.2) per kilometer and charge around MNT1,000 at midnight. Foreigners may be overcharged. Visitors can negotiate the rates before hiring any cab or taxi. One can find various taxi companies which have official licenses such as Noyon taxi, Telecom taxi, Ulaanbaatar taxi, and 1616 taxi.

By Bus:

The bus is also a convenient and affordable way of Ulaanbaatar transportation. Travelers can find regular buses which have a fixed charge of T500 (USD0.17) per ride. There is also an option of electric trolley-buses, which cost T300 (USD0.1), but they are slower and run only on fewer routes. After midnight, in Ulaanbaatar, visitors only can get trolley-buses with a rate of T1,000 (USD 0.35) per ride for only two main ways. Smaller buses or micro-buses are also available for rides that are accessible at T500 (USD 0.17). These buses have someone who shouts the name of the destination in rapid Mongolian at every stop, which can be hard to understand. In Ulaanbaatar, many of the attractions are located closer to Peace Avenue, the main horizontal avenue.
