El Al Israel Airlines

El Al stems from the Hebrew, meaning 'to above'. Previously the national airline of the State of Israel, El Al Israel Airlines was born immediately after the birth of its nation in 1948. From the year of 1982, it was under insolvency management until 1996 when it restarted business. Its privatization started in June 2003 and now more than half of its shares are held by Knafaim-Arkia Holdings - a private enterprise company in the country. El Al has developed rapidly in recent years and now operates scheduled passenger flights to America, Europe, Asia and Africa. It owns a 40% market share in domestic aviation market, and is the second Israeli carrier in the international market.

Hub:

Headquartered in Israel's capital city Jerusalem, El Al Israel Airlines bases at the Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv of the country.

Established in 1936, Ben Gurion International Airport was first known as Wilhelma Airport. Between 1948 and 1973, it is called Lod Airport due to its location. Today, the airport is still located at Lod which is 15 kilometers (9 miles) southeast of Tel Aviv; however, it is now named to commemorate the first prime minister of Israel – David Ben Gurion. At present, Ben Gurion International Airport is the largest and busiest airport in the country, with over 10 million passengers each year. It is regarded as the best airport in Middle East according to a survey conducted by Skytrax, a leading British quality advisor to world airlines and airports.
