All Nippon Airways

All Nippon Airways (ANA) developed from Japan Helicopter & Aeroplane Transports Co., Ltd. which started operation in 1952, and took its current name in 1957. During its fifty years' development, it continually introduced modern types of aircraft into its fleet and has grown into the largest airlines in Japan and one of the ten largest ones throughout the world. Within Japan, there are more than 800 domestic flights daily, accounting for nearly 50 percent of the share. It now owns over 40 international routes and operates around 250 international flights per week. In 1999, it entered the Star Alliance Network -the largest aviation alliance in the world.

All Nippon Airways started flights to China in 1987. Its airplanes depart from Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya in Japan to 10 destinations of China. Flights to China account for more than 50% of its international flights.

Hub

All Nippon Airways is headquartered in Tokyo with four airport hubs: Narita International Airport, Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport), Osaka (Itami) Airport and Kansai International Airport.

Narita International Airport is located in Narita City of Chiba Prefecture, which is about one hour away from Tokyo downtown area by express train. It is the largest international air harbor in Japan. In terms of capacity of passengers, it ranks the top in the nation with its network connecting 95 cities in nearly 40 countries and region around the world. It is also the Asian hub of some other international airlines.

For the great distance to Tokyo, Narita Airport mainly operates international flights. Haneda Airport, due to the shorter distance from the capital, undertakes most of domestic lines in and out of Tokyo. Located in the southeast end of Ota-ku (a district of Tokyo), it has some 230 flights daily to and from 37 cities within the country.

Kansai International Airport is a great construction by the reclamation of the land from the sea, situated in a huge beach circa 3 miles off the coast, 50 kilometers (31 miles) southeast of Osaka City. It can be easily reached by road, railway and high speed ferry. This artificial island is built to have a capacity of 30 million people per year.

Osaka International Airport (Often known as Itami Airport) is a principal domestic airport if Kansai region after the completion of Kansai Airport. It has its most land in Itami, Hyogo Prefecture and the terminal building in Toyonaka, Osaka, which is connected only with tunnel beneath the runway and the apron. All Nippon Airways is in its south terminal.
