China Inbound Tourism in 2011

In 2011, China Tourism sustained a steady and rapid development. Both of the domestic tourism market and outbound tourism market retained a speedy growth, while the inbound tourism market achieved a smooth increase.

Statistics of Oversea Tourist Markets

 Statistics of Foreign Market 
In 2011, the foreign market of China inbound tourism grew reposefully. The number of foreign tourist arrivals was 27.1121 million, increasing 3.8% from the preceding year.

The market share of Asian tourists took up 61.7% of the total foreign visitors, increasing 2.8% on the previous year. Among the Asian countries, South Korea was the largest tourist source country to China. 

Tourists from other continents varied from each other. The number of tourists from America increased 6.9% from the previous year. The number of tourists from Africa increased slightly over the previous year, with a growth rate of 5.4%. The number of tourists from Europe and Oceania has a 4.2% and 8.9% year-on-year number growth respectively.

Generally speaking, the number of the oversea tourists who stayed overnight in China increased much from the previous year. At the same time, the average expenditure per day was 209.22 US dollars, 11.29 US dollars and 5.7% more than the last year. However, the average duration of stay was 7.3 days, 0.1 days and 1.4% less than the previous year.

 Statistics of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Market

In 2011 Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan were the corpus of mainland China’s inbound tourism market. Among them, Hong Kong and Macau Market both grew steadily, while Taiwan market increased much from the previous year.

The number of tourists from Hong Kong was 79.3577 million, increasing 0.1% compared to that in 2010. Among them, tourists who stayed overnight in China mainland were 26.9159 million, increasing 3.2% and accounting for 33.9% of the visitors from Hong Kong; the rest 52.4418 million had a one day tour in China mainland, down 1.5% and accounting for 66.1.% of the Hong Kong visitors.

Tourists from Macau numbered 23.6908 million, increasing 2.2% than 2010. Among them, 4.2794 million stayed overnight, increasing 8.9% and taking up 18.1% of the visitors from Macau; those who had a one day trip in Chinese mainland numbered 19.4114 million, increasing 0.9% and taking up 81.9% of the visitors from Macau.

The number of tourists from Taiwan totaled 5.2630 million, increased 2.4% from the preceding year. Among them, 4.444 million stayed overnight in China mainland, increased 1.8% and accounting for 84.4% of the visitors from Taiwan; the other 818.6 thousand just made a one day travel to China mainland, increased 5.5% and accounting for 15.6% of the visitors from Taiwan.


 Reception of Oversea Tourists and Tourism Revenue (by Provinces, Autonomous Regions and Municipalities)

Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities under the direct jurisdiction of the central government received a total of 106.5523 million inbound tourists, rose 11.2% from the preceding year. There were 22 administrative areas that received over 1 million tourists, including Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shanghai, Beijing, Fujian, Shandong, Liaoning, Yunnan, Guangxi, Anhui, Shaanxi, Heilongjiang, Hubei, Hunan, Inner Mongolia, Henan, Shanxi, Chongqing, Jiangxi, Sichuan, and Hebei. Guangdong hosted 33.3163 million tourists, still leading over all other provinces and autonomous regions.

Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities received 59.2059 million foreign tourists, up 9.4% over the previous year. A total of 24 autonomous regions and municipalities received over 500 thousand foreign tourists, including Guangdong, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Beijing, Liaoning, Shandong, Yunnan, Heilongjiang, Tianjin, Inner Mongolia, Guangxi, Shaanxi, Hubei, Fujian, Anhui, Chongqing, Henan, Hebei, Shanxi, Hunan, Sichuan, Hainan and Jilin. Guangdong still ranked the first in the country, hosting 7.4934 million foreign tourists.

There were 28 provinces, regions and municipalities’ income of foreign exchange from international tourism exceeded 100 million US dollars, including Guangdong, Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Liaoning, Shandong, Tianjin, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Hunan, Guangxi, Heilongjiang, Anhui, Inner Mongolia, Chongqing, Hubei, Henan, Shanxi, Hebei, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Hainan, Jilin, Xinjiang, Tibet, and Guizhou. Guangdong was still the country’s No. 1, with the international tourism revenue of 13.906 billion US dollars.

Reception of Oversea Tourists and Tourism Revenue Derived from Major Cities

 A total of 46 cities in China received more than 200 thousand oversea tourists, a rise of 1 than 2010, including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Zhuhai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Tianjin, Guilin, Nanjing, Dalian, Chongqing, Qingdao, Xiamen, Huangshan, Ningbo, Kunming, Xi'an, Wuhan, Wuxi, Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Chengdu, Changsha, Shenyang, Zhongshan, Yantai, Luoyang, Wenzhou, Weihai, Zhengzhou, Sanya, Yanbian, Nantong, Harbin, Taiyuan, Qinhuangdao, Jiujiang, Zhangzhou, Changchun, Chengde, Hefei, Jinan, Urumqi, Nanning, and  Datong.

 There were 38 cities received over 200 thousand foreign tourists, which were Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Suzhou, Dalian, Chongqing, Qingdao, Guilin, Nanjing, Xi'an, Kunming, Wuhan, Huangshan, Zhuhai, Ningbo, Chengdu, Xiamen, Shenyang, Wuxi, Fuzhou, Yantai, Changsha, Luoyang, Weihai, Yanbian, Nantong, Wenzhou, Sanya, Taiyuan, Chengde, Changchun, Harbin, Hefei and Qinhuangdao.

 There were 44 cities that had earned more than 100 million US dollars from overseas tourist revenues, 1 city more than the last year. These cities were Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Tianjin, Zhuhai, Suzhou, Xiamen, Nanjing, Fuzhou, Dalian, Quanzhou, Qingdao, Chongqing, Ningbo, Guilin, Xi'an, Shenyang, Changsha, Wuxi, Wuhan, Yantai, Nantong, Huangshan, Chengdu, Kunming, Zhongshan, Sanya, Wenzhou, Weihai, Harbin, Zhengzhou, Taiyuan, Luoyang, Zhangzhou, Qinhuangdao, Changchun, Hefei, Yanbian, Jinan, Urumqi, Chengde, and Lianyungang. Among them, Shanghai’s income of foreign exchange from international tourism reached 5.751 billion US dollars, ranking the first.
