China Inbound Tourism in 2010

In 2010, tourism in China had an obvious resuscitation, developing rapidly throughout the whole year. The domestic tourism market developed steadily, while the inbound tourism resumed its growth. The outbound market also maintained a speedy growth.

Statistics of Oversea Tourist Markets

 Statistics of Foreign Market 
In 2010, the foreign market for inbound tourism to China grew rapidly. The number of foreign tourist arrivals was 26.1269 million – a 19.1% increase from the preceding year.

The market share of Asian tourists took up 62.0% of the total foreign visitors, increasing 17.5% from the previous year. Among the Asian countries, South Korea was the largest source of tourism to China.

There were also surges in tourism coming from other continents. The number of travelers from Europe increased 23.9% from the previous year. The number from America increased by 20.2%. The number from Oceania has a growth of 17.4%. The number from Africa has had a 15.6% year-on-year growth.

In 2010, the number of the oversea tourists who stayed overnight in China increased greatly from the previous year. The average expenditure per day was 197.93 US dollars – 5 US dollars, or 2.6%, more than the last year. However, the average duration of stay was 7.4 days – 0.2 days, or 2.6%, less than the previous year.

 Statistics of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Market
Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan were the primary sources of mainland China’s inbound tourism market. In 2010, the Taiwanese market expanded significantly from the previous year, while the Hong Kong and Macau markets both grew steadily.

The number of tourists from Taiwan totaled 5.1406 million, increasing 14.6% from the preceding year. Among them, 4.3647 million stayed overnight in mainland China, increasing 13.9% and accounting for 84.9% of the visitors from Taiwan; the other 775.9 thousand, accounting for 15.1% of the visitors from Taiwan, spent only one day on the Chinese mainland, representing a 19.1% increase.

The number of travelers from Hong Kong was 79.3219 million, a 2.6% increase compared with 2009. Among them, the number of tourists who stayed overnight in mainland China was 26.0945 million, increasing 2.3% and accounting for 32.9% of the visitors from Hong Kong; the rest, 53.2274 million, had a one day trip to mainland China, a 2.7% increase accounting for 67.1% of the visitors from Hong Kong.

Tourists from Macau represented 23.1729 million visitors, increasing 2.0% from 2009. Among them, 3.9289 million stayed overnight, which demonstrates a 2.1% increase and accounts for 17.0% of the visitors from Macau; the other 19.2440 million had a one day trip in the Chinese mainland, increasing 2.0% from the previous year and taking up 83.0% of the visitors from Macau.

Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities under the direct jurisdiction of the central government received a total of 96.5898 million inbound tourists, rising 20.2% from the preceding year. There were 22 administrative areas that received over 1 million tourists: Guangdong, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Beijing, Fujian, Shandong, Liaoning, Yunnan, Guangxi, Shaanxi, Anhui, Hunan, Hubei, Heilongjiang, Tianjin, Henan, Inner Mongolia, Chongqing, Shanxi, Jiangxi, and Sichuan. Guangdong hosted 31.4093 million tourists, still occupying first place within the whole nation.

Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities received 54.1112 million foreign tourists, up 22.4% from the previous year. A total of 23 autonomous regions and municipalities received over 500 thousand foreign tourists (the list of these is almost the same as above, excepting Jiangxi and instead including Hebei and Jilin). Guangdong ranked first in the country in this category also, hosting 7.3328 million foreign tourists.

The income from foreign exchange in 28 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities exceeded 100 million US dollars (this list includes all those mentioned previously, plus Hainan, Xinjiang, Guizhou, and Tibet). Guangdong yet again was the country’s No. 1, with the international tourism revenue of 12.383 billion US dollars.

Reception of Oversea Tourists and Tourism Revenue Derived from Major Cities

 A total of 45 cities in China received more than 200 thousand oversea travelers, three more than in 2009: Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Zhuhai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Tianjin, Xiamen, Guilin, Chongqing, Nanjing, Dalian, Qingdao, Huangshan, Ningbo, Wuhan, Kunming, Xi'an, Wuxi, Quanzhou, Chengdu, Changsha, Fuzhou, Shenyang, Zhongshan, Yantai, Luoyang, Sanya, Wenzhou, Yanbian, Weihai, Nantong, Zhengzhou, Urumqi, Taiyuan, Harbin, Chengde, Jiujiang, Changchun, Zhangzhou, Hefei, Qinhuangdao, Jinan, and Datong.

 36 cities which received over 200 thousand foreign tourists, four cities more than the precious year: Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Tianjin, Suzhou, Dalian, Chongqing, Guilin, Nanjing, Qingdao, Xi'an, Wuhan, Kunming, Huangshan, Zhuhai, Wuxi, Chengdu, Ningbo, Xiamen, Changsha, Shenyang, Yantai, Fuzhou, Luoyang, Yanbian, Weihai, Sanya, Nantong, Wenzhou, Urumqi, Qinhuangdao, Chengde, Changchun, and Harbin

 43 cities earned more than 100 million US dollars from overseas tourist revenues, four cities more than the year before: These cities were Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Tianjin, Suzhou, Zhuhai, Xiamen, Nanjing, Fuzhou, Dalian, Chongqing, Quanzhou, Qingdao, Ningbo, Xi'an, Guilin, Wuxi, Wuhan, Changsha, Shenyang, Yantai, Nantong, Huangshan, Zhongshan, Chengdu, Sanya, Kunming, Wenzhou, Weihai, Taiyuan, Zhangzhou, Harbin, Zhengzhou, Luoyang, Changchun, Hefei, Qinhuangdao, Yanbian, Jinan, Urumqi, and Lianyungang. Among them, Shanghai’s income of foreign exchange from international tourism reached 6.341 billion US dollars, ranking this region in first position.
