Quantity of Star-rated Hotels and Their Business Statistics
Compared with the previous year, the number of star-rated hotels continued a steady growth generally in 2009. There were 14,237 star-rated hotels in China by the end of 2009, up 1% (138) on 2008. Of these, 506 were 5-star hotels (74 increase); 1,984 were 4-star hotels (163 increase); 5,917 were 3-star hotels (205 increase); 5,375 were 2-star hotels (241 decrease); 455 were 1-star hotels (63 decrease).
In the year, the star-rated hotels combined had 1.6735 million rooms, an increase of 5.2% (82,100 rooms) and 3.0647 million beds, an increase of 4.4% (129,900 beds) over 2008. Their fixed assets totaled 444.298 billion RMB, 8.973 billion RMB more and up 4.4% on 2008. The yearly occupancy rate of the star-rated hotels on average was 57.88%, down 0.42 on the previous year.
In 2009, the total revenue of all the star-rated hotels amounted to 181.818 billion RMB, 5.617 billion RMB more and up 3.2%. They generated 12.216 billion RMB in business tax, 382 million RMB more and up 3.2%. Of all the star-rated hotels, the 5,318 state-owned ones realized revenues of 64.935 billion RMB, and remitted 4.005 billion RMB business tax; the 574 Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and foreign invested star-rated hotels reached 23.683 billion RMB in sales, paying 1.550 billion business tax.

Number of Travel Services and Their Business Statistics
By the end of 2009, the number of travel services included in statistics was 20,399, 289 more than 2008. They had a total asset of 58.596 billion RMB, up 12.3% compared with the previous year. The travel service industry as a whole earned a total revenue of 180.653 billion RMB, up 8.6% on the previous year. They turned in 1.269 billion RMB business tax, up 12.4%.
The international travel services received 12.6143 million overseas tourists who stayed for a total of 56.1589 million days, down 4.8% and 3.3% respectively. The number of overseas tourists organized by international travel services was 18.7338 million, staying for a total of 63.0459 million days, down 7.9% and 1.6% respectively.
The travel services organized 101.2347 million domestic travelers who stayed overnight, up 18.5% than the past year. They spent 300.1897 million days on their travel, up 18.1%. The number of domestic travelers who stayed overnight under arrangement by travel services reached 136.9605 million person-trips and a total of 263.3934 million days, up 31.1% and 14.7% respectively on the previous year.
Education and Training on Travel and Tourism
By the end of 2009, there were 1,733 tourism colleges in China, with a total enrolment of 952,400 students. Among them, 852 were tourism colleges and tourism departments in colleges and universities, 42 more than in 2008 with an enrolment of 498,400, increasing by 58,300 on 2008. The remaining 881 were secondary vocational tourism colleges, 84 less than in 2008, with a total enrolment of 454,100 students, 49,500 more than in the preceding year.
The number of in-service staff of tourism who received relevant training courses reached 3.9711 million, 588,300 persons more than in the preceding year, up 17.4%.
