China Inbound Tourism in 2007

In 2007, China tourism continued to increase. All three markets, the domestic tourism market, inbound tourism market, and outbound tourism, retained a steady growth.

Statistics of Overseas Tourist Markets

 Statistics of Foreign Market 
In 2007, the foreign market of China inbound tourism had rapid growth. The number of foreign tourists was 26.1097 million, increasing 17.6% from the preceding year.

The market share of Asian tourists took up 61.5% of the total foreign visitors, increasing 18.2% from the previous year. Among the Asian countries, South Korea was the largest tourist source country to China.  The number of tourists from Europe increased 17.7% from the previous year. American tourists grew 13.1%. The number of tourists from Oceania swelled 14.1%. African  tourists had a 29.1% year-on-year number growth.

In 2007, the number of the oversea tourists who stayed overnight in China increased from the previous year. The average duration of stay was 7.0 days, 0.1 days more than the previous year. The average expenditure per day was $196.39 US, $21.32 US and 12.2% more than the last year.

 Statistics of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Market

In 2007, Hong Kong and Taiwan markets grew steadily. The Macau market was affected by various factors and had a slight decrease from the previous year.

The number of tourists from Hong Kong was 77.9489 million, increasing 5.5% compared to that in 2006. Among them, tourists who stayed overnight in China mainland were 25.3912 million, increasing 6.2% and accounting for 32.6% of the visitors from Hong Kong. An additional 52.5577 million had a one day tour in China mainland, up 5.1% and accounting for 67.4% of the Hong Kong visitors. The number of tourists from Taiwan totaled 4.6279 million, up 5.5% from the preceding year. Tourists from Macau numbered 23.1868 million, decreasing 5.0% than 2006. 3.9085 million stayed overnight, down 3.8% and taking up 16.9% of the visitors from Macau. Those who had a one day trip in the Chinese mainland numbered 19.2783 million, decreasing 5.3% and taking up 83.1% of the visitors from Macau.

 Reception of Oversea Tourists and Tourism Revenue (by Provinces, Autonomous Regions and Municipalities)

In 2007, Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities under the direct jurisdiction of the central government received a total of 73.1138 million inbound tourists, up 19.1 % from the preceding year. There were 25 administrative areas that received over 500,000 tourists, including Guangdong, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Beijing, Fujian, Shandong, Yunnan, Guangxi, Liaoning, Sichuan, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Hubei, Shaanxi, Hunan, Anhui, Tianjin, Henan, Hebei, Chongqing, Hainan, Shanxi, Jiangxi, and Jilin. Guangdong hosted 24.6087 million tourists, still leading over all other provinces and autonomous regions.

Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities received 42.4290 million foreign tourists, up 20.8% over the previous year. A total of 25 autonomous regions and municipalities received over 400,000 foreign tourists, including Guangdong, Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shandong, Liaoning, Inner Mongolia, Yunnan, Heilongjiang, Guangxi, Hubei, Sichuan, Fujian, Shaanxi, Tianjin, Hunan, Anhui, Hebei, Chongqing, Hainan, Henan, Shanxi, Jilin, and Xinjiang. Guangdong still ranked the first in the country, hosting 6.2851 million foreign tourists.

There were 28 provinces, regions and municipalities’ income of foreign exchange from international tourism exceeded 100 million US dollars, including Guangdong, Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, Liaoning, Yunnan, Tianjin, Heilongjiang, Hunan, Shaanxi, Guangxi, Inner Mongolia, Sichuan, Hubei, Chongqing, Anhui, Henan, Hebei, Hainan, Shanxi, Jiangxi, Jilin, Xinjiang, Tibet, and Guizhou. Guangdong was still the country’s No. 1, with the international tourism revenue of 8.706 billion US dollars.

Reception of Oversea Tourists and Tourism Revenue Derived from Major Cities


 In 2007, a total of 39 cities in China received more than 200,000 overseas tourists, 3 more than that in 2006, including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, Zhuhai, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Guilin, Nanjing, Qingdao, Tianjin, Xi'an, Xiamen, Dalian, Chongqing, Chengdu, Kunming, Wuxi, Ningbo, Huangshan, Zhongshan, Quanzhou, Fuzhou, Wuhan, Sanya, Changsha, Shenyang, Yantai, Wenzhou, Harbin, Weihai, Luoyang, Yanbian, Chengde, Urumqi, Nantong, Qinhuangdao, and Changchun. Additionally, 112 cities received over 100,000 overseas tourists, including Zhangzhou, Jinan, Lhasa, Jiujiang, Shantou, Taiyuan, Haikou, Nanning, Datong, Guiyang, Hefei, and Shijiazhuang.

 There were 41 cities that received over 100,000 foreign tourists, 2 more than 2006, which were Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Tianjin, Qingdao, Xi'an, Guilin, Nanjing, Dalian, Chongqing, Chengdu, Zhuhai, Kunming, Huangshan, Xiamen, Sanya, Wuhan, Ningbo, Wuxi, Shenyang, Changsha, Fuzhou, Weihai, Yantai, Yanbian, Wenzhou, Luoyang, Urumqi, Qinhuangdao, Chengde, Harbin, Nantong, Changchun, Zhengzhou, Lhasa, Zhongshan, Taiyuan, and Nanning.

 There were 36 cities that had earned more than 100 million US dollars from overseas tourist revenues, 3 cities more than the last year. These cities were Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Zhuhai, Suzhou, Nanjing, Tianjin, Xiamen, Qingdao, Fuzhou, Dalian, Xi'an, Quanzhou, Ningbo, Chongqing, Wuxi, Guilin, Changsha, Shenyang, Chengdu, Nantong, Sanya, Yantai, Wuhan, Zhangzhou, Zhongshan, Kunming, Huangshan, Harbin, Wenzhou, Qinhuangdao, Weihai, Zhengzhou, and Urumqi. Additionally, there were 11 cities that had earned more than 50 million US dollars from overseas tourist revenues, including Luoyang, Changchun, Lianyungang, Jinan, Chengde, Taiyuan, Hefei, Yanbian, Shantou, Lhasa, and Jiujiang. Shanghai’s income from international tourism reached 4.673 billion US dollars, ranking the first.
