2007 China Tourism Facts & Figures

Compared with the previous year, the size of the star-rated hotels continued a steady growth generally in 2007. There were 13,583 star-rated hotels in China by the end of 2007, 832 more than that in the end of 2006 with an increasing rate of 6.5%. They totally owned 1.5738 million rooms, 113,900 more than 2006, up 7.8%. There were totally 2.9694 million beds by the end of 2007, 184,000 more than that by the end of 2006, increasing 6.6%.

Among those star hotels, 369 were 5-star hotels, 67 more than in 2006; 1,595 were 4-star hotels, an increase of 226 hotels; 5,307 were 3-star hotels, a rise of 528 hotels; 5,718 were 2-star hotels, increased 20 hotels; 594 were 1-star hotels, lessened 9 hotels. The fixed assets of those star hotels totaled 429.857 billion RMB, up 8.6% than 2006. The yearly occupancy rate of the star-rated hotels on average was 60.96%, down 0.07 on the previous year.

In 2007, the total revenue of all the star-rated hotels amounted to 164.703 billion RMB, up 11.1%. They turned over 11.834 billion RMB of business tax to the state, increasing 9.4% than 2006. Of all the star-rated hotels, the 5,806 state-owned ones realized revenues of 61.992 billion RMB, and turned over a business tax of 4.114 billion RMB to the state; the 592 Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and foreign invested star-rated hotels reached 28.482 billion RMB in sales, turning over 1.962 billion business tax to the state.

By the end of 2007, the travel services included in statistics summed to 18,943, 986 more than that in 2006. They had a total asset of 51.700 billion RMB, up 6.6% compared with the previous year. The travel services as a whole earned a total revenue of 163.930 billion RMB, up 16.2% on the previous year. They turned in 1.097 billion RMB business tax to the state, up 10.8%.

The international travel services received a number of 13.7304 million oversea tourists that stayed for a total of 58.2187 million days, up 24.0% and 22.1% respectively. The number of overseas tourists organized by international travel services numbered 21.7514 million, staying for a total of 63.7870 million days, up 17.3% and 20.9% respectively.

The travel services organized 84.2448 million domestic travelers who stayed overnight, up 11.1% than the past year. They spent 263.9176 million days on their travel, up 15.1%. The number of domestic travelers who stayed overnight under the arrangement by travel services reached 106.3169 million person-times and a total of 237.4245 million days, up 10.5% and 11.2% respectively on the previous year.
 By the end of 2007, there were totally 1641 tourism colleges in China, with a total enrolment of 773,800 students. Among them, 770 were tourism colleges and tourism departments in colleges and universities, 8 more than in 2006. The enrolment had reached 397,400, increased 23,700. The left 871 were secondary vocational tourism colleges, 70 less than in 2006, with a total enrolment of 376,400 students, 2,700 more than in the preceding year.

The number of in-service staff of tourism who received relevant training courses reached 3.2094 million people, 344,200 persons more than in the preceding year, up 12.0%.
