About Temple of Heaven

Temple of Heaven is the world's largest ceremonial building complex. The emperors worshipped heaven and prayed for harvest there in Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911 AD). It is a treasure of ancient Chinese architecture as well as a true portrayal of the ancient oriental civilization. In 1998, it was recognized as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

Echo Wall

The Echo Wall is the circular wall of Imperial Vault of Heaven. It has the effect of echo. If two persons stand respectively under the east wall and the west wall and speak softly toward the north, they can clearly hear the echo of their words.

Circular Mound Altar

The emperors worshipped the Heaven there on the winter solstice every year. The number of stone steps, stone slabs and stones of each tier are all in multiples of nine, which emphasizes the supremacy of the Heaven as nine is considered a positive number showing emperors’ dignity. There is the Heaven Heart Stone at the center of top tier. When people stand on the stone and speak, the voice sounds extremely sonorous.
