Fuling
At the confluence of Wu River and the Yangtze River, is a city called Fuling in southeastern part of Chongqing. With a history spanning over 2,000 years, Fuling was once the capital city of the Ancient Ba Kingdom. As the Wu River is named Fu Water, and the Mausoleums (Ling in Chinese) of the Ba Kingdom's Kings are mostly built here, the place is called Fuling.
Fuling is regarded as the material distributing center of the Wu River drainage area, the first city of Wu River and the gateway to Southeast Chongqing. It is the renowned 'village of preserved pickle'.
For thousands of years, the historic relics together with the natural beauty of the city have made Fuling a mystery and charm all of its own.
The cultural relic Baiheliang (White Crane Ridge), which is reputed as the 'Underwater Stele Forest' and the only ancient and well preserved hydrologic station, lies in Fuling. Over one hundred carvings and inscriptions can be found in this spot. Another famous relic is the Dianyi Cave, where the famous physicist from the Song Dynasty - Cheng Yi - cultivated himself, and made notes for the Book of Changes. Cliffside inscription by calligraphists of past dynasties has been admired by numerous visitors here; Xiao Tianxi Graves collecting many cultural relics offer important material to the research of the history and culture of ancient Ba man. Among the excavated relics, the chime-bell has been exhibited in other countries; Yutai Shan (Rain Platform Mountain), once a religious holy land, was the place where the ancient people prayed for rain.
Travel upstream on the Wu River from Fuling and you will reach Wulong County in Chongqing, the county reputed to be the natural geological park. Natural wonders such as the Fairy Mountain and Furong Cave are within view.
