Yangtze River Bridge: How many bridges are there over the Yangtze?

According to the statistics, there are more than 100 Yangtze River bridges over the main stream of the Yangtze, among which, 2 bridges over Tuotuo River section, 2 over Tongtian River section, 41 over Jinsha River section, and another 55 over the downstream from Yibin.
 

Types and Use of Yangtze River Bridges

Most of Yangtze River bridges are cable-stayed bridges, followed by suspension bridges, beam bridges and arch bridges. In terms of use of transportation, some are railway bridges, some are highway bridges, and others include light rail-cum-road bridges, foot bridges, conduit bridges and multiple use ones.
 

Most Famous Yangtze River Bridges

Length: 1,670 meters (1,826 yards)
Type and use: beam bridge carrying railway and highway
Location: Wuhan, Hubei Province; the middle reaches of the Yangtze
Open to traffic on October 15, 1957, Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge is the first bridge over the Yangtze. This Yangtze bridge has double decks for both railway and highway: the upper is for highway and the lower is for railway. It has been a landmark of Wuhan since it was built.

Location: Nanjing, Jiangsu Province; the lower reaches
Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the first Yangtze bridge designed and built by Chinese on their own in 1960s. It has been a milestone in Chinese bridge construction history. Like Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge, Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is also a combined bridge with highway on the upper deck and the railway on the lower.
 

Shanghai Yangtze River Bridge

Length: 16.6 kilometers (10.3 miles)
Type and use: combined cable-stayed and tunnel bridge for highway
Location: Chongming District, Shanghai; the estuary of the Yangtze
Shanghai Yangtze River Bridge is unique as it isn’t straight, but slightly curved in an S shape. Connecting Chongming Island and Changxing Island, it has helped river-crossing transportation with six-lane carriageway. The cross-river tunnel is the world’s largest, 55 meters (60 yards) under water at its deepest.

Location: Jiangsu Province, the lower reaches
Sutong Yangtze River Bridge is a highway Yangtze River bridge open in June, 2008 and connects Nantong and Suzhou. Only 45 minutes are needed to drive from Suzhou Industrial Park to Nantong downtown, rather than 150 minutes in the past. It is made up of three sections: cross-river bridge, connection project on south bank and connection on north bank. The whole Sutong Yangtze River Bridge is 32.4 km (20.1 mi) long and the cross-river part is 8,146 meters (8,909 yards). When it was built, it broke several world records. Until now, it still has the second longest main span and the third highest bridge tower worldwide.
 

Wushan Yangtze River Bridge

Length: 612.2 meters (670 yards)
Type and use: arch bridge for highway
Location: Chongqing; the upper reaches; the estuary of Daning River
Located in the starting point of Wu Gorge, Wushan Yangtze River Bridge is regarded as the Gate of Eastern Chongqing. It is a highway arch bridge with steel structure. Wushan Yangtze River Bridge was started to be built in December, 2001, with preliminarily opening in April, 2004, and officially opening to traffic in January, 2005.
 

Dashengguan Yangtze River Bridge

Length: 9,273 meters (10,141 yards)
Type and use: arch bridge for railway
Location: Nanjing, Jiangsu Province; the lower reaches
Dashengguan Yangtze River Bridge is a steel truss bridge, built to carry a high-speed railway. It was opened officially on January 11, 2011. It is the first six-track railway bridge in the world. When it was completed, Dashengguan Yangtze River Bridge was also the high-speed railway bridge with the longest span and the largest load-carrying capacity in the world.
