Usually considered to be the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet, Samye was initiated around 762 in Dranang County of Shannan, in a shape of a giant mandala consisting of a cluster of temples. The main temple houses many murals, Buddha statues and other religious relics, making it an important pilgrimage destination and a place of interest for tourists as well.
