Yungang Grottoes (17)
The Yungang Grottoes are one of the largest grottoes in China, along with Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang and Maiji Caves in Tianshui.
Located in the Hunyuan County of Datong, the Hanging Monastery lies at the foot of Mount Hengshan. It hangs on the west cliff of the Jinxia Gorge which is over 50 meters above the ground, thus called Hanging Monastery.
The well-preserved Nine Dragon Screen was built for the thirteenth son of Zhu Yuanzhang, the first Emperor of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Built more than 600 years ago, it is currently the oldest and largest glazed screen of China.
Wooden Pagoda (3)
Regarded as the 'First Pagoda in the World', the Wooden Pagoda in Datong is located in Yingxian County. It is the also the oldest and highest wooden structure of China.
