Around the 7th century BC, China entered the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period, when states contended with one another for land and fortune. In the need for mutual defense, some bigger states such as Chu, Qin, Qi, Yan, Zhao, Wei, Han and Zhongshan founded by Di nationality built the wall on the border or the strategical area. Since these walls were usually very long, people called it "great wall". It is said that Great Wall was called "walled square" in the ancient literature.
