Hecang Fortress in Dunhuang Photos

Hecang Fortress also called Square City, lies in the gobi 60 kilometers (37 miles) northwest of Dunhuang City, 20 kilometers (12 miles) east from Yumenguan Pass. It was built by the side of the Shule River. On its south and north is the large gobi, which is much taller than it. It's difficult to see the fortress at a distance unless you walk close to it. The ancient people took advantage of this landform and built a quartermaster depot there.
  • Little holes at the bottom of the wall were said by experts to probably serve as ventilation facilities in the past.
  • The Hecang Fortress was built of earth with some parts dilapidated.
