Mountaineering is the most popular activity in August on Mt. Fuji. Starting from the 5th Station on mountain slope, mountaineers can climb up to the summit and trek around the crater. Fuji Five Lakes are the best photo spot of the mountain, among which Lake Kawaguchi is the most-visited, equipped with Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway. Lake Yamanaka is alluring with Hana no Miyako Kouen, where sunflowers all over the field form stunning scenery under Mt. Fuji. Narusawa Ice Cave is a natural icehouse in the five lakes area. It’s quite interesting to explore the cool cave created by volcanic eruption. Oshino Hakkai, another best spot for photographing of Mt. Fuji nearby, is antique and picturesque with a set of ponds, thatched cottages, and waterwheels.
Tips
1. August is the peak season of mountaineering on Mt. Fuji as the rainy season is over. But the trails might also be closed temporarily in the bad weather of heavy rain or gales. Mountaineers are advised to watch the local weather forecast and prepare linen gloves, alpenstock, raincoat, drinking water, some food, and more.
2. Remember to put on safety helmet and warm clothes when getting into Narusawa Ice Cave. Visitors need to stoop in the cave, and it’s easy to knock the head when raising up.
