Kyoto Weather in March

CityWeather
Season: Early spring

In early March, Kyoto weather is still cold. By the time of mid-March, the temperature rises observably and it becomes warmer. But the temperature is not steady and fluctuates frequently. Thus, people may be cozy several days ago and feel chilly a few days later. The temperature difference in a day is also large. Maybe it is warm during the daytime, but cold or even frigid at dawn and nights. Nevertheless, the temperature is slowly increasing in general. In detail, the average high temperature is 13℃ (55.4℉) or so in March.

Thick clothes could be taken off gradually, and replaced with thinner clothing like thin sweater, knitwear, and windbreaker.

Higashiyama is the most beautiful place in Kyoto in March. Higashiyama Hanatouro, the brilliant illumination, lights up the road and links Shoren-in Temple and Kiyomizu-dera Temple up with more attractions in Higashiyama district at night. The magnificent scenes are dreamy and romantic. For culture lovers, Kitano Odori, the dance performance by geisha at Kamishichiren Kabuki Theater, can be a grand feast. The first half of March gives visitors a chance to sightsee plum blossoms, too; to mid-late March, oriental cherry blossoms begins to flower. Kamo River, Arashiyama district, and more are popular places to admire blooming cherry blossoms.

Tips

1. Higashiyama Hanatouro is around 5km (3.1mi) long, so you’d better wear comfortable shoes for there would be a long walking. Some food stalls by road also provide mouth-watering local snacks.

2. Kamishichiren Kabuki Theater has Kitano Odori performances annually in March, lasting for 2 weeks. You should book the ticket in advance, and get to the theater an hour earlier if you also want to enjoy a tea ceremony there.

3. Visitors who are allergic to pollen should wear a mask when admiring the beauty of blossoms.
