General information

The Portuguese Republic covers an area of 92,090 square kilometers and is located on the Iberian Peninsula. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and south and by Spain on the north and east. The geographical location of Portugal makes it an easy access to other European countries and destines its prosperity. It is mild in winter and agreeable in summer, the average rainfall ranges from 500-1000 millimeters.

Forest coverage reaches up to one third of the land area of Portugal. Half of the world's cork production derives from Portugal; the export is No. 1 in the world, that's the reason why it is called the kingdom of cork. It is also one of the main wine-maker. Castles, palaces and museums are easily to be found, which bring many tourists from all over the world. The tertiary industries develop rapidly. Tourism takes a larger proportion in the foreign currency income and it is the essential means to balance the foreign trade deficit.

The nine-year compulsory education is practiced with 3 year's study in high school and 4 to 5 years' study in university. It possesses about 300 museums of different sorts, 1,600 libraries, 300 cinemas and theatres, 300 exhibition halls and galleries.
 

Diplomatic relationship

Portugal advocates the friendly bonds with all the countries on the basis of equality, reciprocity and mutual benefit. The diplomatic relations were established on February 8, 1979 between Portugal and China. Traced back to 1502, the envoy was already dispatched to the Ming dynasty. With Macau's return to his motherland smoothly, the solid diplomatic foundation was laid and a new era began.
