The Sultanate of Oman lies in the extreme south-eastern corner of the Arabian Peninsula, at the crossroads of three continents and four seas. Oman has sovereignty over many small islands in the Strait of Hormuz, Salamah and her Daughters in the Gulf of Oman, and Masirah and the Hallaniyat Islands in the Arabian Sea. It shares boundary with the United Arab Emirates to the north, the Republic of Yemen to the southwest and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the west.
Heritage, Culture and the Arts
Oman has a rich cultural heritage of forts, castles and archaeological sites. The government not only makes efforts to protect its heritage, but also promotes its culture and arts through various official institutions and channels, such as annual art and literary events, cultural weeks, literary association and the cultural clubs. The Ministry of Tourism recognizes the importance of the forts and historic sites as tourist attractions, so it takes measures to renovate the forts of Nizwa, al Hazam Fort, Bait al Radaida, Khasab, Bait al Nu’man and Barka.
Economic Development
The oil and gas are its leading industries. Oman began to export oil in 1967. Production gradually rose to reach a high of 956,000 barrels per day in 2001, falling back in 2002 and 2003 because of the declining productivity of some wells. At present, there are nearly 20 oil prospecting and production companies in the country. The discovery of extensive new petroleum reserves at the Budour Field in southern Oman was one of the most significant oil discoveries in 2007. Budour Well No.2 began to produce high quality oil over 5,000 barrels per day. Petroleum Development is carrying out an intensive programme of appraisal drilling in the Budour field in 2008 and has made a promising new discovery in the Rabab Field also in the south.
Agriculture, livestock and fishing are traditional industries. The agricultural sector produces most of Oman’s food needs, making an effective contribution to the country’s food security and accounting for the greater part of the country’s non-oil exports. The livestock is an important and growing sector which employs a large part of the Omani population.
Visa information:
The immigration authorities reject any applicant on arrival, even if the passengers can meet all the requirements. It declined anyone without visas several yeas ago. The guidelines have been modified to welcome more tourists. No Objection Certificate is a must before applying for the visa. It is a kind of official document that proves the Omani sponsor and the government having no objection for the entry. But Americans need no longer such a document. Applicants will be notified of the number once the NOC is issued. The fax will be sent to the airline company from the Immigration Department and then you are allowed to board the flight to Muscat. Contrariwise, if the airline company is not authorized for it, you are not allowed to board the flight. Once you are at the airport in Muscat, you must go to the NOC window where you can get a piece of notice that you can take to the passport control and exchange for a visa.
Please contact China Embassy in Oman if Omani citizens will go to China.
