Location
Azerbaijan is located in the southeast Transcaucasia, bordering Armenia and Georgia to the west and northwest, Russia to the north as well as Iran to the south. It faces to the Caspian Sea to the east, lasting a coastline of 713 kilometers (443 miles). Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, an exclave of Azerbaijan, is situated in the south Transcaucasia and surround by Armenia, Iran and Turkey. It is a mountainous country with rare plain that its over a half area is occupied by mountain.
Climate
Azerbaijan is mainly controlled by the sub-tropical climate thanks to the Mount Caucasus which prevents the cold air from north. Most region has warm and dry climate also due to its far distance from sea. On the other hand, influenced by its various landforms and the nearby Caspian Sea, the climate is also varied little in different regions. The rainfall in middle and east part is only around 200 millimeters as well as over 1200 millimeters in the humid southeast along the Caspian Sea. There is little snow in winter.
Economy
The petroleum industry with its affiliated industries contributes to Azerbaijan's GDP greatly. The explored reserve of petroleum is over 3.5 billion tons, so the country is considered to be one of the most important regions for oil exploration and development in the world. The farming population accounts for 39% of the whole country's work force, producing about 7% GDP yearly.
