Brief Intro: This is the third time for China to host the International Horticultural Exposition. The other two were respectively held by Kunming City in 1999 and by Shenyang City in 2006. Classified as an A2+B1 level exhibition, the International Horticultural Exposition 2011, Xi'an has over 105 participants composed of cities and organizations from home and abroad. It is estimated to welcome 12,000,000 visitors during the 178 days.
The actual site of the exhibition is in the Guangyuntan (Guangyun Lake) Ecological Scenic Area, one of the cores in Chan-Ba District. The site covers an area of 4.18 square kilometers (1,033 acres), including the water area of 1.88 square kilometers (465 acres). Relying on the Chanhe River and Bahe River, Guangyuntan was an important port in ancient China. In the Tianbao Period of the Tang Dynasty, a grand water transport exposition and trade fair was held here to show the state's developed commerce and trade as well as its smooth water transportation. The current Guangyun Lake of Chan-Ba District is located in the northeast of Xi'an City, about a 20-minute drive from city center and 40-minutes from Xi'an Xianyang International Airport.
Mascot: Chang'an Flower
The lively mascot of Int'l Horticultural Expo 2011 is inspired by the pomegranate blossom, the city flower of Xi'an.
Emblem: Chang'an Flower
Chang'an, the ancient name of Xi'an City, has been the capital of 13 dynasties in Chinese history. The elegant blooming Chang'an Flower consists of four layers, each of which is a polygon. The triangle at the flower center is in the shape of the Chinese character '人' (people in English), which is the basic element of the exposition, implying civilization, responsibility and reason. The second layer is a rectangle, which looks like the ancient City Wall, presenting a harmonious living environment. The pentagon of the third layer is a five-petaled flower symbolizing all the things in nature in terms of the Chinese Fengshui culture. The outmost hexagon is a snowflake and the appearance of running water, indicating a tolerant universe. The entire Chang'an Flower embodies the harmonious co-existence of human beings, cities, nature and the universe, corresponding to the exposition's theme.
