Best Time to Visit Pingyao

September to November is the best time to visit as the weather of Pingyao is cool with not much rain. Try to avoid October 1st to 7th, Chinese National Holiday, when it is quite crowded. In late September every year, the China Pingyao International Photography Festival is held, which is worth a visit. Traveling in January is also a good choice. It is relatively cold, but there are abundant activities and performances during the Chinese New Year celebration.

The climate of Pingyao is a temperate continental monsoon climate, which results in four distinct seasons. Temperatures differ greatly between day and night all year round.
 

Spring (Mar-May)

The temperature can rise and fall rapidly in spring. Sometimes it is 5C (41F) in the morning and evening; it can be 25C (77F) at noon. It doesn’t rain too much, but the wind is strong during this season. Considering the extreme temperature difference and the strong wind, remember to take warm clothes with you.

What to Wear: long-sleeve T-shirt, hoodie or sweatshirt, windbreaker, walking shoes
 

Summer (Jun-Aug)

In summer, it is hot and dry with average temperatures of about 23~28C (73~82F) and the highest temperature at 25~30C (77~86F). To avoid sunburn, take some sun-blocking protections such as sunglasses, sunscreen and parasol. Also summer is the season when it rains the most, and usually unexpectedly. Therefore, take an umbrella and rain gear, and wear shirts that dry quickly.

Autumn (Sep-Nov)

The weather in autumn is similar to the weather in spring, with the temperature varying greatly from night to day. What is different is that the wind is not as strong as in spring, so traveling to the Ancient City of Pingyao in autumn is a good choice. With not much rain and sunny, cool weather, this season attracts a lot of tourists from all over the world.

Winter (Dec-Feb)

Winter in Pingyao is relatively cold with the lowest temperature at -10~-5C (14~23F). It is windy and dry in winter. It can be dusty on some windy days, so wearing a mask is helpful. Snow is not so common but sometimes when it snows, the ancient city will be covered by a thin layer, which is quite beautiful especially with traditional decorations during Chinese New Year. Traveling during this time, you can participate in local activities to enjoy the festive atmosphere. Watching Shehuo, a kind of folk art performance to celebrate the New Year, is popular.
