 Theme: Better City, Better Life

Five Sub-themes: 
Blending of diverse culture in the city;
Economic prosperity in the city;
Innovation of science and technology in the city;
Remodeling of communications in the city;
Rural-urban interaction

Goals through theme content development:
To elevate public awareness of challenges in the 'urban age' and to identify potential solutions;
To facilitate the conservation of the heritage of our cities; to raise public awareness of healthy urban development;
To disseminate concepts, successful practices and innovations in sustainable urban development; to seek models of sustainable urban development for developing counties;
To enhance the communication and understanding within human society.  

 Emblem: The emblem of Expo 2010 shows three people encircling each other, standing for you, me and him/her holding hands together. It expresses the Expo's principle of communication, understanding, gathering and cooperation among all humankind. The major body of the emblem is also the Chinese character 'shi' which is 'world' in English. It means that the Expo 2010 is to be a global event showing the diversified urban culture worldwide.

 Mascot: Haibao

The cute Haibao, the mascot of Expo 2010 Shanghai China, was inspired from the Chinese character '人' – people. It not only well embodies the essence of Chinese people oriented culture but also expresses the designing concept of the emblem of 2010 World Expo again.

Hair: the sea-wave like hair shows that Haibao has active personality, and also indicates the character of its birthplace Shanghai.
Face: the friendly cartoon expression of Haibao is full of confidence.
Eye: Haibao's big and round eyes show his expectation to the cities' future.
Blue: stands for rising and potential China, abounding in latitude and imagination
Body: its very cute and round body shows the harmonious and nice life.
Fist: Haibao thumbs up to express his appreciation and sincere welcome to the friends from all over the world.
Big Feet: supported his body firmly, foreshowing that China is able and faithful to host an excellent World Expo.

 Bureau International des Expositions or International Exhibitions Bureau

The Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) is an international, governmental organization sanctioning and monitoring international exhibitions. Established in 1928, the headquarters of BIE is located in Paris and currently includes 98 nations.

 World Expo

It is a global, non-commercial exposition, originally aimed at exhibiting the accomplishments of human beings in artwork and traditional craftwork. During its 150-year history, it has become the world wide summit for presenting scientific developments and technology as well as industrial technology. It is now the largest international exposition for exhibitors to show their achievements concerning economy, society and culture as well as science and technology. Moreover, every Expo also attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to its abundant performances and specially-designed buildings in addition to the exhibitions.

Usually, it is hosted by the government of a country, with participation by other countries and international organizations. In terms of the BIE's provision, there are two categories of exhibitions. One is the International Registered Exhibition, also called

Theme Pavilions of Expo 2010
Comprehensive Exhibition. It is held every five years, lasting for six months. The other one is called the International Recognized Exhibition, also called Professional Exhibition. It is held after every other International Registered Exhibitions, lasting for 3 months.

 World Expo Forum

The forum, used to select the theme of the Expo from different perspectives, is an important component of each World Expo. From 2003 to 2009, an international forum will be held every year by BIE and the Shanghai Municipal Government, around the theme - 'Better City, Better Life'. Each forum will be divided into three categories in terms of the attendees. They are high-end forums, theme forums and public forums.
