One of the Oldest Cities in Liaoning
Situated in the center of Liaoning Province, Liaoyang city is bordered by the 'steel capital', Anshan, to the south and 'the city of coal and iron', Benxi, to the east. Shenyang, the capital city of the province, is just 60 kilometers (37 miles) away in the north. Liaoyang is a famous cultural city with a history of more than 2,300 years. Six local powers once established their capitals here. Therefore, there are a large number of historical sites including tombs, tomb murals, White Pagoda, and temples. More than 6,000 cultural relics are collected in Liaoyang Museum from porcelains, bronze wares, statues, stone tablets, calligraphy and paintings. Besides, the beautiful scenery of Hehoogou Scenic Area and Longding Mountain Scenic Area is also fascinating.
Liaoyang Attractions - Things to Do
Baita Park
Located in Zhonghua Jie, it is comprised of four tourist zones: for historic relics, a children's park, and zones for flower and animal appreciation respectively. The White Pagoda (Baita) standing in the park was built in the Liao Dynasty (916-1125). It is the highest pagoda in Northeast China.
Longfengshan Scenic Area
Situated in Liaoyang County about 35 kilometers (22 miles) from downtown area, it is an attractive resort combining historic relics and beautiful mountain scenery. Longfeng Temple was first built in the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt in modern time. In addition, Jinggang (King Kong) Peak, Wofo (Reclining Buddha) Mountain and the meandering Jiulong River are all superior options to consider while visiting the scenic area.
Hehuogou Scenic Area
It lies in the Hanling Town of Liaoyang County and is made up of Huolong Valley (Huolonggou), Xida Valley (Xidagou) and Huaxi Valley (Huaxigou). Having beautiful and pristine scenery, the Hehuogou area is especially favored by painters, being reputed as a natural gallery.

How to Get to Liaoyang
Liaoyang is only an hour's drive from the capital city of the province, Shenyang. Visitors can find Liaoyang's long-distance bus station in Shengli Lu (near the square of the railway station), Shuangta District. Buses running here are available from the bus station near the Shenyang North Railway Station.
Weather
Most of the city is situated in the temperate monsoon climatic zone, with its western region enjoying a warm temperate semi-humid monsoon climate. With a coastal influence, Liaoyang weather has four distinct seasons, and comparatively humid and moderate weather. Spring is warm and dry, and summer is torrid and rainy. After the cool and humid autumn, comes the long and chilly winter. Spring and autumn are nice months to tour around.
Liaoyang Travel Tips
History: Liaoyang is the oldest city of Liaoning Province, with an administrative history of more than two thousand years. It was first known as Xiangping, and had been a leading city in eastern Liaoning during the Western Han Dynasty (206BC-24AD). The current name, initially appeared in the late Tang Dynasty (618-907).
Physical Features: Located between the low mountainous region of eastern Liaoning and the Liaohe Plain, the city slopes downward from the southeast to the northwest. Low mountains and hills are distributed mainly in the east of the city.
