Jiangsu Weather

Jiangsu is located in the transition zone from temperate to sub-tropical climate zone. Generally, Jiangsu weather is hot in summer and cold in winter. The southeast holds the highest temperature in Jiangsu Province, and the temperature decreases gradually from the southeast to the northwest. Bounded by west-east Huaihe River, the area to the south of the river is wetter with more rainfall than the north part. At the same time, the coastal area in the east gets more rainfalls as well than the west.
 

Best Time to Visit Jiangsu

As Jiangsu temperature is quite high in summer and low in winter, the spring and autumn with moderate temperature are the best time to visit. Besides, from April to May, the spring flowers are in full bloom; from September to November, Jiangsu China weather is mild and pleasant to see autumn leaves as well as to taste ripe fruits and Taihu Lake freshwater fishes.

Jiangsu Climate - Seasons & Travel Advice

Jiangsu climate is featured by four distinct seasons and monsoons. The average temperature all year around is about 13~16℃ (55~61℉), and January in winter is the coldest time while July in summer is the hottest. Because there are numerous lakes and rivers in the region, including vast Taihu Lake, Jiangsu is pretty wet. Especially in summer, it’s wetter for the plum rains and influence of monsoon from the sea.
 

Spring (Mar - May)

Jiangsu weather changes more often in spring, with an average temperature of 14.9℃ (59℉) or so. Western area is 4-7 days earlier than the east to reach the same temperature. You may enjoy the oriental cherry blossoms at Turtle Head Isle in Wuxi, plum blossoms on Plum Blossom Hill in Nanjing, yellow rape flowers and flocks of fowls at Qinhu Wetland Park in Taizhou. Spring is also a good time to visit water towns and classical gardens in Suzhou, including Zhouzhuang Water Town and Humble Administrator's Garden.

Summer (Jun - Aug)

In hot summer, Jiangsu is under the high temperature of 26~29℃ (79~84℉) at average, and Nanjing becomes one of hottest cities nationwide during this season. In June and July, the province ushers in its plum rain season brought by the southeast monsoon. The rains come to the south of Huai River first; about one week later, the rain to the north of Huai River begins as well. Typhoon also hits Jiangsu in summer and August has the most records. Waterside Tianmu Lake, Turtle Head Isle, Slender West Lake, Tongli Water Town, etc. are nice summer resorts in Jiangsu to escape summer heat. Remember to check the Jiangsu weather forecast beforehand, to avoid continuous rains and typhoons.

Autumn (Sep - Nov)

Up to mild autumn, Jiangsu turns into a colorful world with autumn leaves as well as a land of abundance. Travelling on cool sunny days is a wonderful thing to do there. Maples on Qixia Mountain and Tianping Mountain, sweet-scented osmanthus on Purple Mountain, fat hairy crabs and fishes in the Taihu Lake... are appealing.

Winter (Dec - Feb)

The average temperature wanders around -1~3.3℃ (30~38℉) in winter there, however, there is few snow in the months. Jiangsu weather is cold this time period that it’s the slack season to travel outdoors. Tangshan Hot Spring Resort and other hot spring sites, Plum Blossom Hill and more with wintersweet blossoms are considerable attractions to visit. If traveling there around Chinese New Year, you can go to the Qinhuai River in Nanjing to appreciate colorful lantern shows.
