Beiji Village

Chinese Name: 北极村
 English Names: Beiji Village, China’s Arctic Village, or North Pole Village
 Location: the northernmost point of China, at 53 degrees northern latitude

Located in Mohe, Beiji Village  is the northernmost village in China. Because of the high latitude of 53 degrees, there happens white nights phenomenon around the summer solstice with nearly 20 hours of daytime per day. If you are lucky enough, you can feast your eyes on the gorgeous aurora borealis. Nicknamed as the North Pole Village, winter there can be extremely cold with the lowest temperature of -58 degrees Fahrenheit (- 50 degrees Centigrade). Heaven snowfall in winter would turn the village to a white fairyland, presenting seemingly endless snowscape. During that time, you can have fun playing snow activities, like sledding, snowball fighting, and snowboarding.

Life in the village is quite simple. Most of the natives still preserve their traditional lifestyle, fishing and hunting, as if the long-term snowfall has washed away the interference of the modern life. Houses there are typical wooden Russian style cabins. The river abounds with numerous kinds of cold-water fish. Stewing fish with the river water making the fish even tasty. In winter, the river will be frozen and the cabins will be covered under the snow. Sculptures of snow and ice are distributed everywhere in the snowy village. Spend your day in the village must be a great getaway experience from the busy city life.
 

Viewing the Aurora Borealis at Summer Solstice

If you come to Beiji Village at summer solstice, you may have a chance to see the aurora borealis. Additionally, there will be a bonfire party held on the riverside around that period. This custom is originated from a legend. Long time ago, an old couple lived along the river with seven beautiful daughters. Later, the daughters were picked by the Queen Mother of the West serving as her maids. The seven daughters were allowed to go home and reunite with their parents every summer solstice. At that night, there would be colorful light bands (aurora borealis) in the sky which were regarded as the symbol of their return. Since then, it has become a tradition to come to the riverside lighting the bonfires and waiting for the seven daughters on summer solstice.
 

Northernmost Post Office

Northernmost Post Office is also named Christmas Post Office because of its unique Christmas mailbox and the Christmas trees decorated with ribbons and bells. The snowman dolls and reindeer toys are hung everywhere, making this place full of Christmas atmosphere. Visitors from all over the world will come to this post office to buy the postal souvenirs, such as post cards, and stamp the items with the special seals.
 

Northern Nationality Garden

With an area of 478,396 square yards (40 hectares), Northern Nationality Garden is a large culture base of the northern ethnic groups. It contains three major parts, National Unity Square, Russia Garden, and Oroqen Garden, with buildings like Oroqen Museum, Orthodox Church, Russian Bar, and Andre’s Farm. Besides the distinctive constructions, you can know more about the northern minorities through the singing and dancing performance.
 

Seven-Star Square

The name of the square is derived from the seven stars of the Big Dipper. It is located at the southern bank of the Heilongjiang River (Amur River), marking the frigid border of China. There is a stone tablet on the square with four Chinese characters carved on it, ‘Shen Zhou Bei Ji’, which means the northernmost place in China.
 

Travel Tips

2. Winter there is frozen with an average temperature of -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Make sure you have prepared enough cold-proof outfits, like down jacket, snow boots, and cotton gloves.  
3. There is a sightseeing bus taking you to each spot, you can also rent a bike and ride around the village.
4. Beiji Village lies upon Heilongjiang River on the south and faces Russia across the river. Taking a boat along the river to view the border scenery must be a special tour experience.
 

How to get there?

Most of the visitors will choose Harbin as the transfer station to Beiji Village, for transportation between Harbin and the scenic area is relatively more convenient. You should take trains or planes to Harbin first, and then get to the village.
 

By train

Take trains in Harbin Railway Station to Mohe Railway Station at 18:36 or 18:52. The trip would take about 20 hours. Upon arrival, take the bus to the scenic area at the train station. The bus runs during three periods every day: 8:00 – 10:30, 15:00 – 17:00, and 21:00 – 22:30. The bus ticket costs CNY 25/per person.
 

By air

Take a plane to Mohe Gulian Airport, and then take a taxi to Mohe Railway Station, which would cost CNY 50. Take a through bus to the Arctic Village at the station. Or, you can spend CNY 200 chartering a minibus to the village at the airport.
