Like most southern regions in China, Guangdong weather is generally warm throughout the year. The climate of spring and autumn is mild. Summer is long and hot, and accompanied by occasional typhoons. Winter is not so cold. T-shirts fit most time of a year.

Guangdong Climate - Seasons & Travel Advice

Sunshine and rainfall are both abundant in Guangdong. With the tropical and subtropical monsoon climate, Guangdong has a warm weather in spring, autumn and winter. In summer, it is hot, but isn’t extremely hot. June to August is the rainy season. Traveling during this time, remember to take rain gears. Typhoons may occur in summer, when you need to keep an eye on the weather forecast to avoid traveling there during the typhoon time.  
 

Spring (Feb - Apr)

Spring is a transition season, when the climate changes frequently. Sometimes the weather is sunny and pleasant, while sometimes it may be rainy and cloudy as in winter. But as a whole, it is a mild and pleasant season to travel around. You can climb onto Danxia Mountain or White Cloud Mountain to enjoy the colorful flowers and green plants blanketing the mountain slopes, South China Botanical Garden to appreciate various flowers, and visit Yearning Tea Plantation in Meizhou to see the vast green tea fields, tea leaves picking and tea making.

Summer (May - Sep)

Summer is five months long, hot with much rainfall. June is the peak time of rainfall, so taking an umbrella or a raincoat is very necessary. From July to September of each year, several typhoons hit Guangdong; so pay attention to weather forecast and avoid traveling there when typhoon hits. To seek for coolness in summer of Guangdong, you can go to Dameisha Beach and Xiaomeisha Beach in Shenzhen, where you can play with water and participate in a lot of interesting water activities. You can also go to Zhuhai Chimelong Ocean Kingdom to play with polar animals like penguins and polar bears. After sun sets, a night cruise on Pearl River is a nice choice to enjoy the cool breeze and beautiful night views along the banks; the landmark building Canton Tower is along the river, too.

Autumn (Oct - Nov)

In autumn, sunny days takes most of the time. The climate is as mild as in spring. In such comfortable weather, you can pay a visit to some cultural scenic areas, such as Chen Clan Academy in Guangzhou, and Window of the World and Splendid China - Folk Culture Villages in Shenzhen. You may also go to Foshan, the ‘hometown of Chinese Kungfu’, to learn Chinese Kungfu at Ancestral Temple and Bruce Lee Ancestor's House. Although Autumn is short in Guangdong, you should not miss the colorful scenery and Yuexiu Park in Guangzhou is recommended; you can go there in the morning to do some morning exercise like the locals do while appreciating the charming scenery, then enjoy a big Cantonese Tea Branch - Yum Cha.

Winter (Dec - Jan)

Winter is the dry season, mostly sunny with bright sunshine. Compared with many other regions in China, Guangdong is not cold at all. In January, the coldest month, the average temperature is 9~16℃ (48~61℉). You can go to Guangzhou Chimelong Tourist Resort to have a close contact with wild animals in the safari park, have fun in the birds park, or enjoy the performances from the circus; or go to Kaiping Diaolou and Villages to see the buildings integrating residence and fortress and combining traditional Chinese and western styles. Nansha Wetland Park welcomes many migrate birds who spend their winter. Around New Year, the amusement parks will hold many celebration activities, like Happy Valley, Window of the World, etc.
