Hong Kong Trains - High Speed Rail

About 188 pairs of high speed trains run daily along Hong Kong high speed rail between West Kowloon Railway Station and Mainland China, including over 158 pairs for short-distance trips to/from Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Dongguan, as well as over 30 pairs for long-distance trips to/from Beijing, Shanghai, Kunming, Changsha, Fuzhou, Xiamen, Chaoshan, Chengdu, Tianjin, Nanning, Zhanjiang West and Shantou. Their top speed is 200 km/h (124 mph) in Hong Kong and 350 km/h (217 mph) in Mainland China.

In the future, more bullet trains will be operated along the Hong Kong high speed rail to connect this international metropolis with more cities in the mainland.

Beijing - Hong Kong & Shanghai - Hong Kong Overnight High Speed Sleeper Train



Recently, China Railway announced that overnight high speed sleeper trains between Beijing and Hong Kong will be operated since June 15, 2024 on every Friday to Monday. The overall travel time will be shorted from 24h31m to 12h34m. The tickets will be available for sale since June 5, 2024.

This is an underground railway station specializing in bullet trains for passengers to/from mainland. It has four floors: B1 is ticket hall; B2 is arrival hall; B3 is departure hall and B4 is for platforms. The station will be connected with MTR Kowloon Station and Austin Station when opened in the coming September. 
 

Entry and Exit Formalities Both at Hong Kong

The entry and exit points of Hong Kong trains to China mainland are both set at the Kowloon Railway Station. This greatly saves passengers’ time from queueing for two lines for entry and exit formalities respectively. 

Also, as each bullet train carries at most 579 passengers, the waiting line for passing the customs is not long. In general, the whole formality can be done in 5 minutes.  
 

How does the Hong Kong high speed train look like?

In general, it looks like the high speed trains running in the mainland, but there are some more advanced and carefully designed details: 

1. It has a white appearance with red or orange belt. 
2. It is fully covered with WiFi. 
3. Every seat is equipped with an independent 2-pin and 3-pin electricity charging socket. 
4. Washing rooms for the disabled are set between carriage no.7 and no.8. They are large enough for driving wheelchairs and infant care table is also available inside.

The Hong Kong high speed rail tickets can be bought both at West Kowloon Railway Station in Hong Kong and any railway stations in Mainland China, the official websites, hotlines and designated ticket outlets of operators in both sides. The earliest available time is 30 days ahead of departure date. ID certificates are required for booking and the most frequently used is passport.

How to Change/ Refund the Ticket

As Hong Kong and Mainland China adopt different ticketing system, the ticket change and refund channels are also different. Generally, passengers are advised to reach the original booking channel for submission. If booking via an agency, contact your agency for details. Different agencies adopt different cancellation/ change policies. 

A ticket can only be changed once and only departure time, train no. and seat class can be changed. A changed ticket cannot be refunded.

This station has four floors. The departure and arrival halls for different routes are located on different floors. There are clear English signs help passengers to find where they want to go. About transportation to other downtown areas, MTR East Rail Line, which has a stop there is the first choice. 
 

How to Buy Tickets

The intercity through Hong Kong train tickets can be bought at Hung Hom Railway Station, other ticket offices and from agents in the city and the departure stations in the mainland. Tickets to Shanghai and Beijing are available 30 days prior to departure while those to Dongguan, Guangzhou East, Foshan, and Zhaoqing can be purchased 30 days prior. Children under 5 years old ride for free when sharing a seat with an adult with a valid ticket; children between 5 and 9 years old ride at 50% off discount; children over 9 needs to buy a full-priced ticket.
 

Ticket Change and Refund

In mainland, a ticket can only be changed or refunded at the departure station. In Hong Kong, a ticket can only be changed or refunded at the spot it was purchased. A ticket can only be changed once and it can only be changed to a ticket with the same destination and seat class as the original one. Changed tickets are not refundable.
