Former Residence of Zhou Enlai

Former Residence of Zhou Enlai is a Spanish-style garden building on No.73, Sinan Road in Former French Concession. It was once the place where Zhou Enlai who was the former Chinese premier has worked and lived in Shanghai in 1946. It is well-preserved, and now you can still see the layout of the room at that time, and can also see the furniture and some work items copied as they are. Zhou Enlai has received US Presidential Envoy Marshall here and held Chinese and foreign press conferences. Actually, it was the Shanghai Office of the Delegation of the Communist Party of China during the negotiations between the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese Revolutionary Party after the Sino-Japanese War.

Former Residence of Zhou Enlai  is a 4-storey villa built in the early 1920s. Particularly, while the other buildings on Sinan Road are three stories, only the former residence of Zou Enlai has four floors.

The First Floor

A south-facing room of about 40 square meters (48 square yards) is the reception room. Zhou Enlai has held many Chinese and foreign press conferences here. A 14-square-meter (17 square yards) room facing east is Zhou Enlai's office and bedroom where the interior furnishings are very simple. The clean and tidy quilt on the bed was issued when the Shanghai Office was established and Zhou Enlai’s work materials and his books were on the table. Zhou Enlai often worked here late into the night. In the middle is a dining room with an area of about 20 square meters(24 square yards).

The Second Floor

The second floor is the office and bedroom of the Shanghai Office staffs. And there are radios, English typewriters, mimeographs and other items on display.

The Third Floor

In the middle of the third floor is a group dormitory, which was often used as a temporary accommodation for colleagues from other places.

The Ground Floor

On the ground floor of the building, there is a lodge and a garage where a copy of Buick car used by Zhou Enlai is parked.

Garden

The garden is on the south side of the building. On the lawn in the middle of the garden, is a statue of Premier Zhou, a fountain and a cedrus that is said to be planted by Zhou Enlai and his wife.

Adjacent to the Former Residence of Zhou Enlai is an annex building which located in No. 71, Sinan Road. It is a historical photo exhibition hall, showing the background of the office. If you are interested in it, you can visit it by the way.
