Golden Lotus Square

Macau Golden Lotus Square
Macau Golden Lotus Square
Located on the Rua Luis Gonzaga Gomes, Golden Lotus Square, also known as the Lotus Square, is a famous tourist attraction and a landmark of the city. Its area is 16,500 square meters (4 acres). The sculpture "Lotus Flower in Full Bloom" in its center is spectacular.

Golden Lotus

The lotus is the city flower of Macau. In 1999, the central government presented two lotus sculptures to Macau to celebrate the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region. The smaller one, with a diameter of 1 meter (1 yard) and a height of 0.9 meters (3.0 feet), is displayed in the Handover Gift Museum, while the larger one is installed at the center of Golden Lotus Square. The golden lotus at the center of the square, which is made of bronze and gilded, is very attractive. With a diameter of 3.6 meters (3.9 yards) and a height of 6 meters (19.7 feet), the sculpture weighs 6.5 tons.

The golden lotus in Golden Lotus Square consists of a stem plus several petals and stamens. The base is made of 23 red granite stones. They are in the shape of three lotus leaves, symbolizing the Macau Peninsula, Taipa Island and Coloane Island. In front is a small plaque with the inscriptions "Lotus Flower in Full Bloom", "People’s Republic of China Presents It to the Government of Macau SAR ", and "December 20th, 1999", the Macau S.A.R. Establishment Day. This flower in full bloom symbolizes the prosperity of the region.

Flag-raising Ceremony

Golden Lotus Square has become a great site to hold various activities since it came into use. The most well-known is the flag-raising ceremony at 08:00 every morning. In September, 2000, the local government installed two flagpoles on Golden Lotus Square to celebrate the 51st anniversary of the establishment of the People's Republic of China. The first flag-raising ceremony was held here on October 1st, 2000. Since then, it has become a daily practice to raise the flag of China and the flag of Macau. On National Day (Oct. 1st) and Macau S.A.R. Establishment Day (Dec. 20), government officials participate in the ceremony.

Other Activities

Apart from the daily flag-raising ceremony, there are many other activities. During the Beijing 2008 Olympics, the torch was relayed on the square. On May 3rd, 2008, Golden Lotus Square, decorated with colorful Olympic flags, boards painted with mascots holding torches, and the banners bearing the theme of the Beijing Olympics, witnessed the Olympic torch relay. Thousands of people gathered on Golden Lotus Square and celebrated the unforgettable exciting moment.

Furthermore, beautiful flowers are usually displayed around the golden lotus sculpture during great festivals, such as the Chinese New Year and Christmas. A great number of local people and tourists can be found taking photos and strolling around Golden Lotus Square.
