Victoria Park

Victoria Park, the largest public park on Hong Kong Island, is located in Causeway Bay in the Eastern District. It was established in 1955 and first opened to visitors in 1957. With an area of 190,000 square meters (227,238 square yards), this park has many kinds of athletic facilities for visitors and citizens to enjoy. Nowadays, as an urban green lung, Victoria Park is a lovely public place.

History of Victoria Park

Although the price of land in Hong Kong can be compared to gold, the government still built this park in order to provide a secluded area for citizens and to preserve the natural environment of green hills and clean water. The Victoria Park is named after Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom in order to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Visitors can see a large bronze statue of Queen Victoria at the main entrance of the park. The statue was originally erected on Statue Square and moved here in 1952.

Sports Facilities

Victoria Park has several kinds of sports facilities, such as swimming pools, tennis courts, soccer fields and many other kinds of athletic fields. One of the tennis courts is the largest stadium and can accommodate 3,611 people. It holds the Davis Cup (men's team tennis) every year. There are another 13 tennis courts for people to play on. The park is also equipped with six soccer fields and four outdoor basketball courts. During weekends, people often invite some friends and play in competitions. Under the dense shade of more than 5,500 trees, there is a 600 meters (2,000 feet) path for runners. It is different from running in a gym because the fresh air and pretty natural scenery make runners feel more refreshed as well as relaxed, so it is common to see many local people jogging here. In Victoria Park, visitors can see a different Hong Kong and that it is not necessary for people to adapt a fast-paced life. Instead, they can choose their own way to relax and release working pressure.

Festivals and Activities

Its advantageous location and convenient transportation makes it the most appropriate place to hold large-scale outdoor exhibitions in Hong Kong. Every year, the Lunar New Year flower market and the Hong Kong Flower Show are held in Victoria Park. More and more local people and tourists like to have a special Chinese New Year in Hong Kong and enjoy the festival atmosphere. Especially, the Hong Kong Brands and Products Expo held before Christmas is a popular fair with many specialties.

The Victoria Park also plays an important role during the Mid-Autumn Festival (the 15th day of the eighth lunar month). The central lawn of the park provides a big open-air area for entertainment. Every year, thousands of visitors and citizens come here to eat moon cakes and enjoy lanterns under the full moon. In addition, visitors can see the wonderful lantern party and colorful fireworks on this day.

The City Forum, a distinctive feature of Victoria Park, is held every Sunday. This forum is also a live show of Radio Television Hong Kong. It is just like the forum in Hyde Park of London, which is the embodiment of democracy and freedom. Politicians, famous public figures and ordinary people from all over the world come together and express their ideas and opinions. The topics of the speeches are mainly related to current issues. If visitors are still in Hong Kong on a Sunday, it is a good opportunity to join the City Forum and enjoy the clash of ideas from different cultures and social backgrounds.
