Tsing Ma Bridge

As a landmark in Hong Kong, the Tsing Ma Bridge is the longest car and rail suspension bridge in the world. It is also the eighth longest suspension bridge in the world. The bridge connects Tsing Yi Island with Ma Wan. It, together with Kap Shui Mun Bridge linking Ma Wan with Lantau Island, serves as an essential route between Hong Kong International Airport and the city. As splendid as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Tsing Ma Bridge was listed as one of the 'Top Ten Architectural Achievements of the 20th Century' by the American architectural circle in 1991.

Structure of the Tsing Ma Bridge

The Tsing Ma Bridge is one of the ten core projects of Hong Kong International Airport. The bridge took only five years to build from May 1992 to May 1997, and is the shortest of all architectural projects of the same kind. The bridge is not only an architectural symbol in Hong Kong, but also a world construction accomplishment.

The Tsing Ma Bridge is part of Lantau Link, and its location is: over the sea between Tsing Yi and Ma Wan, (across the Ma Wan Strait). The gross length of Tsing Ma Bridge is 2,160 meters (7,087 feet) and its main span is 1,377 meters (4,518 feet), and is 62 meters (203 feet) above water. It has two bridge towers 206 meters (676 feet) high, which are made from concrete and steel. The suspension cable is 16 kilometers (9.9 miles) long, and the steel weighs 50,000 tons.

The bridge consists of two decks. On the upper deck is a bi-directional six-lane motorway. The lower deck comprises two emergency lanes for cars and trains along which the Airport Express Line and the MTR Tung Chung Line travel.

Sightseeing Spots

To the northwest of Tsing Yi Island stand the Lantau Link Visitors Center and Viewing Platform. There are models and pictures about the Tsing Ma Bridge in the Lantau Link Visitors Center. A path winds its way up to the Viewing Platform, where tourists can look at the Tsing Ma Bridge between Tsing Yi Island and Ma Wan, the Kap Shui Mun Bridge between Ma Wan and Lantau Island, and the Ting Kau Bridge between Tsing Yi Island and Tuen Mun in the distance.

Because there is no sidewalk on the bridge, it is not accessible on foot. To enjoy Tsing Ma Bridge closely, one can take a bus from the New Territories to Tung Chung or Hong Kong International Airport, which travels through the bridge. Traveling on the magnificent bridge across the vast sea would be a delightful and unforgettable experience!
