A Symphony of Lights

A Symphony of Lights is a famous laser lights and music show in Hong Kong. It is presented by the Hong Kong Tourism Commission through organizing 44 skyscrapers and landmarks that lie on the sides of the Victoria Harbour. Through interactive lighting and music show, it shows the vibrancy and glamorous night view of the city. The local Tourism Commission initiated the project A Symphony of Lights in 2004, and it was formally included in the "Guinness Book of World Records'' as the world largest lighting and music show on Nov. 21, 2005.

The night view along the beaches of Victoria Harbour is a famous attraction. Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula are full of high-rise buildings so at night, the lights blaze so magnificently and so beautifully around the harbor. It is one of the top three night views in the world along with Hakodate, Japan, and Naples, Italy.

 With its altogether five themes of the show, A Symphony of Lights shows the audience an energetic, vibrant and colorful metropolis through its bright and varied colors.

A Symphony of Lights

 Scene one [Awakening]
Several lines of laser lights represent the wakening of the earth, then the colorful lights brighten the buildings that are involved in the show, showing the process of the birth and growth of the city.

 Scene Two [Energy]
Through a gradient effect shining from the bottom to the top, the color of the buildings changes and the laser and search lights' dancing in the sky show creativity and vibrancy.

 Scene Three [Heritage]
With the melodious accompaniment of Chinese music, with lucky red and golden lights shining on the buildings on the beaches of Victoria Harbour, traditional Chinese cultural features are paraded before the audiences.

 Scene Four [Partnership]
With laser and searchlights radiating toward each beach and the colorful lights on both of the beaches interacting, this scene mainly shows that Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula are working together to usher in a brilliant future.

 Finale [Celebration」
Turn on the light that rotates like a kaleidoscope accompanied by flying and shining light effects. It signifies everybody working together to create a brighter future for the Asian metropolis--Hong Kong.

 20:00 everyday with a duration of 13 minutes
 The music and narration are aired alongside the Avenue of Stars to the seaside beside Hong Kong Cultural Center and Wan Chai Golden Bauhinia Square Seaside Gallery. The music and narration are sent in several languages: English on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Mandarin on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday and on Sunday the music and narration are in Cantonese.

Audiences can also listen to the radio along the harbor: FM103.4 MHz (English), FM106.8 MHz (Cantonese), FM107.9 MHz (Mandarin) or listen through your cellphone: 35-665-665 (English), 35-665-668 (Mandarin). It is charged as an ordinary call.
  1. to Golden Bauhinia Square:
Take MTR Island Line to Wan Chai Station and get out from Exit A5. Walk across the footbridge, walk east and pass through the lobby of the Central Plaza, go on walking across the linking overhead walkway, then get down to the ground level. Walk towards the waterfront, and you can see the bronze bauhinia statue and monument on the left. It is about a 15 minutes' walk.
 2. to Avenue of Stars:
Take MTR West Rail Line to East Tsim Sha Tsui Station and get out from Exit L6. Then follow the signs to the Avenue of Stars and Tsim Sha Tsui Waterfront.
  Firework Show
On some special days, such as some holidays, the Hong Kong Tourism Board may arrange a firework show along with A Symphony of Lights.

 The New Year Countdown
From 2007, New Year Countdown is held every year in Victoria Harbour on Dec. 31. It starts from 23:40, after a light show on both of the beaches. In the last 20 seconds of the year, fireworks fly up to the sky around the landmark building–the Two International Financial Center–through the countdown. At the moment of the New Year, fireworks fly up from the other 16 skyscrapers beside the harbor. After the countdown, there is a firework show lasting for two minutes. A live show of the activity is on TV and Internet.
