Hong Kong Cultural Centre

Hong Kong Cultural Centre sits on the waterfront next to Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Terminus, a close neighbors of Hong Kong Space Museum, Avenue of Stars, Hong Kong Museum of Art and Harbour City. Between the center and the pier stands the historic Clock Tower built in 1915, the Cultural Center was set up by the Urban Construction Council and is administered by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of Hong Kong Government. It is a grand local center for a variety of cultural activities and tours.

The center was opened to the public on November 8th, 1989. At the opening Ceremony the British Crown Prince Charles and Princess Diana were invited to the ceremony and declared it open. The design of the center is unique. It looks like a boomerang with a sloping roof, simple and easily recognizable. The building was designed by the Architectural Services Department of Hong Kong. There are no windows implying the performances inside are judged by the audience themselves.

Occupying an area of 5.2 hectares (12.8 acres), Hong Kong Cultural Center boasts three main performance halls, including the Concert Hall, Grand Theatre, Studio Theatre, Exhibition Gallery, Exhibition Area, Rehearsal and Practice Rooms, conference room, souvenir store and restaurant.
 

The Concert Hall for music performances has an oval shape and a total of 2,019 seats which can be divided into two tiers, encircling the central stage. One of the greatest pipe organs in the world, an Austria mechanical tracker organ with 93 stops and 8,000 pipes is in the hall. The hall has an adjustable acoustic canopy and curtains to ensure a high quality acoustic effect.
 

The Grand Theatre in Hong Kong Cultural Center features many modern stage facilities, including an electrically-operated orchestra pit that can accommodate 110 musicians. The auditorium can be divided into three tiers and contains 1,734 seats. Between every two tiers of the seats there is an infrared system, providing simultaneous interpretation in five languages. The Studio Theatre is not big but has a flexible design. Its seating layout can be adjusted freely according to the stage form. The seat capacities can range from 303 to 496.
 

The Exhibition Gallery is located on the fourth level of the Administration Building, covering an area of 287 square meters (343.25 square yards). It is equipped with audio and projection equipment, desks and chairs, etc, designed for meetings and tea parties. The center has four exhibition sites and a main foyer space for small scale art exhibitions. The Serenade Chinese Restaurant offers a good view of Victoria Harbor and a fine selection of dim sum. Encore Bar, Café Muse and Starbucks are other choices.
 

By Metro:
1. Take Tsuen Wan Line and get off at Tsim Sha Tsui (Exit E).
2. Take East Rail and get off at Tsim Sha Tsui East (Exit J, or Subway Tunnel L6).

By City-bus:
1. Take bus 1, 1A, 2, 6, 7, 8A, 8P or 9 to Hong Kong Cultural Centre.
2. Take bus N21 or N21A and get off at Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier.
