Nanjiang Grand Canyon

Nanjiang Grand Canyon is located in Kaiyang County, about 54 kilometers (34 miles) from Guiyang City. Visitors can view the special karst landscape and encounter over 80 natural landscapes and 40 waterfalls there. The valley stretches for over 40 kilometers (25 miles) with a deepest point of 398 meters (1,306 feet). 122 kinds of birds and 36 kinds of animals live harmoniously in the old-growth forests and on the sharp cliffs. Taking a kayak to drift down the rapid river is a must-do activity here.

The starting point for rafting is near the entrance gate and you will pass by most of the scenic spots during the drifting. There are two rafting options: the whole course ends at Mandarin Duck Lake while the shorter route stops at Caozi Pond midway. If you choose the latter, you need to walk for another three kilometers (two miles) along the Flying Dragon Plank Road to Mandarin Duck Lake. If you are not a big fan of rafting, you can take a free shuttle bus at the entrance to reach the main section of Nanjiang Grand Canyon to start your visit. You will encounter the following scenic spots during the journey:

Water Dropping from a Pavilion

This is the first spot you will encounter in Nanjiang Grand Canyon. A part of the cliff stretches out, making it a natural pavilion above the river. A small waterfall running down from the cliff is like a bead curtain hanging from the pavilion.

Golden Bell Fall

This is the largest and best-protected travertine fall in Asia with a height of 16 meters (52 feet). It is given the name of golden bell because people can hear the sound of a bell when they knock on the rock.

Mandarin Duck Lake

Mandarin Duck Lake in Nanjiang Grand Canyon runs eight kilometers (five miles) along the lush valley. Thousands of wild mandarin ducks live and breed there in winter, hence the name.

Here you can find rocks in various shapes, some of which look like a Buddha, a monkey, a seal, a trumpet…

Once you arrive at Mandarin Duck Lake, you can either take a cable car or hike to the mountaintop to catch a free shuttle bus back to the entrance gate; alternatively, you may hike down the plank road back to the gate.
