Best things to do in China
15. Join the rail revolution
China’s relentless high-speed rail expansion programme connects Beijing to the rest of this vast, sprawling nation, so make the capital your first stop on a multi-city tour. Needle-sharp bullet trains will fire you southwest to mountainous Kunming in Yunnan province in 13 hours (previously a 21-hour journey), while it’s just ten hours to foodie Guangzhou in the south.

17 Facts About the Great Wall of China You Should Know
The Great Wall of China is a perfect day trip for travelers based in Beijing.“Most clients do one day at the Great Wall as part of a visit to Beijing,” explained Godwyn. “Typically, we have a day of sightseeing in Beijing - then the second day is an excursion to the wall.”
Pick the part of the wall that best suits your needs and interests. Active, confident hikers should venture to Jinshanling, while families may want to stick with the more accessible Mutianyu section (there’s an unforgettable, five-minute toboggan ride from the top of the eastern end to the bottom).
Check specific fees in advance, but expect to pay around 25 to 65 yuan (under $10) for general admission (www2.travelchinaguide.com/cost-to-visit-great-wall-of-china.htm) to the Great Wall. read more

About Traveling to The Great Wall of China
Construction on the Great Wall of China dates back to the Qin dynasty, however, it's primarily the work of the Ming dynasty. The wall -- originally built to keep Mongols from invading China -- was expanded over time, and eventually became the longest wall in the world. The wall isn't continuous, instead it's comprised of different sections. Deciding which sections to visit during your trip depends on your physical condition, the crowds and the weather conditions.

How can you get a free six-day visa for China?
China has a 144-hour visa exemption for UK transit passengers arriving or departing by sea or air and then travelling onwards to a third country (not the country from which your ship or flight originated). This exemption covers those arriving in Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin. Before boarding, your cruise ship will request proof of your homeward flight. You will then be required to present this to immigration officials when disembarking in Shanghai. It’s a good idea to have to hand a copy of your Shanghai accommodation booking. Xi'an, China, beyond its ancient terra-cotta warriors
On a rainy morning, pedestrians and cars darted in and out as a bus began climbing a switchbacking road into a steep, narrow canyon that would take us to the base of Mt. Hua, or Hua Shan, as it is known here.
The no-nonsense driver didn’t hesitate to lean on the horn at the slightest provocation, his lack of patience suggesting he might not be the person you want at the wheel on a mountain road the wet asphalt abruptly slips into a ravine.
